We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit Aristotle.
Physical Fitness plays a key role in Karate training. In order to execute techniques properly, you need to have the stamina to the drills over and over again and you need the strength and flexibility to withstand the rigors of Kata and Kumite. While many people start attending Martial Art classes to help them attain a higher fitness level or "get in shape", the classes are not specifically designed for that purpose. If they reach the black belt level, they will have found that supplemental training is very important.
Increasing your aerobic capacity is paramount for Karate training. This will enable you to make it all the way through a class and be able to concentrate on your techniques. You can not get as much out of class if you just trying "to keep up". One of the best exercises for those just starting out is walking; from there you may want to progress to biking, aerobics classes, stair stepping or running. You may even decide to try one of the current fitness "fads". As long as it helps keep your interest, it may be worth a try. Also important to your Karate training is a strong musculo-skeletal system. This will allow you to maintain proper form, balance, and withstand blows to the body. It will even aid recovery from injuries. Strength conditioning involves weight bearing exercises or other such training. A word of caution, you can sustain some significant injuries if these exercises are done incorrectly. It is important to have a good, qualified trainer when beginning.
The trainer can teach you the proper techniques and match a program to your needs.
Another aspect of physical fitness that is key to your Karate training is flexibility. You need to have good flexibility in order to execute some of the techniques. Good flexibility also helps recover from injuries and, in some cases, will prevent nagging injuries. You should stretch some everyday. Be careful not to do ballistic (bouncing) motions, as injuries may result. By carefully stretching the muscle and holding it, you will gain the most benefit.
All aspects of Karate, physical, mental and spiritual, are equally significant. Take care to be in condition. Being physically fit has many benefits; the most important of which is helping to safeguard your health.
